About The Event

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities, and to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This day is great opportunity for BLC to learn and to be involved in our community. If you’re available that day, we’re encouraging BLC folx to attend at least one of these events.

1. Skagit Valley College

  • 9-11 a.m. Free breakfast with screenings and discussions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speeches.
  • 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Join a community service project. Learn how to crochet blankets for community shelters. Create hygiene and food kits. Participate in a campus clean-up. Decorate bags for Meals on Wheels or create Valentine’s Day cards for children in the hospital.

The events will be held in the cafeteria in the Knutzen Cardinal Center on the Mount Vernon campus and in Oak Hall, room 223 on the Whidbey Island campus.

2. Skagit Land Trust

Monday, January 16th, 10:00am - 2:00pm Cumberland Creek Conservation Area

This opportunity requires registering at this site, which also contains more information. Most of SLT’s volunteer events are limited to 20 people, so sign up early!

Join Skagit Land Trust as we participate in this Day of Service by connecting with our community and stewarding the lands we share. This event will take place at Cumberland Creek Conservation Area. While the floodplains of Cumberland Creek are tucked in with their winter waters, join us to maintain the Leaf trail and remove invasive species at the high and dry areas of this lovely property that borders the south bank of the Skagit River and protects the lower reaches of Cumberland Creek.

3. Meet at BLC at 3pm for coffee, discussion, fellowship
